ELECTRONICS
H.E.R
My final composition project was an homage to my four years of development as an artist. It incorporated live ensemble recordings, sound design, electronic manipulation, multichannel presentation, and bespoke staging and lighting, which transported listeners through a narrative journey in light and sound.
A description is as follows:
"Follow H E R through a world of light, sound and story.
A rich and strange journey,
Experience another life,
Another time,
Another place.
Be surrounded by blinding fantasy,
and engulfed in shadow.
Nothing here is as dark as it seems..."
SoloS - Mirror Image
This piece is for solo Piano and electronics and plays on the concept of palindromes. The player performs excerpts of music which the electronics then reverse in response. These excerpts can be swapped between the piano and electronics to create 2 performances in 1. Furthermore, if one wanted to manipulate the material further, they can change the order of which these excerpts are played.
#Curate - Send and Receive
Visuals and controls created with Max MSP and sound created with a Modular Synthesis, Send and Receive explores the connection between sound and picture.
Within the Max Patch, there are groups of sounds which are randomly selected by the patch. These sounds travel through presets embedded in the patch and the performer uses these presets to create their own music/performance. During this, the sound triggers the visuals which change their shape due to the nature of the sound.
New Leaf
This piece begins with a singular, spirited melody line on the piano. I was inspired by the melody and consequently the piece’s tonality resides prominently in the Dorian mode. Also, in reflection, I decided instead of having a duet between the electronics and notation, I wanted the electronics to assist the material, and bring out the music already performed rather than add more to the already polyphonic sound, achieved through electronic plugins like Decay, Reverb and EQ via a Max Patch. I decided to call the piece New Leaf, as this style of music was like a breath of fresh air for me and was written during the turning of a new decade.
This piece is also dedicated to Uncle Ben, who was and will always be a breath of fresh air.
Electronic Tracks
FM.AM.
One of the six pieces nominated to represent Wales in ISCM China, FM.AM. was created entirely from radio recordings, and explores the concept of audio manipulation. Using radio recordings to create new instruments, reverb and rhythms, the listener can enjoy this experimental piece and experience the flurry of radio.
Submerge
This experimental piece was made entirely out of water bottle sounds, pushing digital manipulation to it’s limits
Molten
A piece which experiments with the human voice, using bespoke instruments to create a molten-like soundscape.
Rhyfel in Resonance
This is a sonic response to Dylan Thomas’ Rhyfel. Each new sound reflects a line of the poem and they then interact with each other to create a sound world of the poem.
